Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’ (Sunflower)

Sunflower 'Lemon Queen', Perennial Sunflower 'Lemon Queen'

AGM Award
Helianthus 'Lemon Queen', Sunflower 'Lemon Queen', Lemon Queen Sunflower, Yellow Flowers, Yellow Perennials

Free-flowering, Helianthus ‘Lemon Queen’ (Sunflower) is ideal for brightening up the late-season garden. This tall and upright perennial features luminous sprays of pale yellow flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm), with light yellow ray florets surrounding a dark yellow central disk. The abundant flowers blanket the entire bush and cover the foliage of coarse, dark green leaves. Often called a showstopper, ‘Lemon Queen’ is a valuable addition to the landscape with its spectacular floral display that lasts about 6 weeks from late summer to fall.

  • Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society for its noteworthy qualities.
  • Forms a dense, arching mound up to 6-7 ft. tall (180-210 cm) and 30-36 in. wide (75-90 cm).
  • Prefers full sun and enjoys moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, neutral to alkaline, well-drained soils. However, this plant is not too fussy about soils and tolerates a wide range, including very dry ones. Do not over-fertilize; the plant might tend to flop and hence require some support.
  • Low maintenance, this is an excellent choice for the back of perennial borders, where dazzling flowers are welcomed in any color scheme. Perfectly suited to the cutting garden, city gardens, coastal gardens, and cottage gardens.
  • Attractive to butterflies, hummingbirds, and bees, it is deer and rabbit resistant.
