Rhododendron 'Windbeam'
Windbeam' Rhododendron, 'Windbeam' Azalea, Deciduous Azalea, Early Midseason Azalea
Prized for its compact habit, luminous spring flowers, and remarkable cold hardiness, Rhododendron 'Windbeam' is a popular small-leaved deciduous Azalea hybrid. As the leaves emerge in mid-spring, abundant ball-shaped clusters of 8 funnel-shaped white flowers, up to 1 in. wide (2.5 cm), tinged with soft apricot, appear at the branch tips, adding elegance and beauty to this early midseason Azalea. After a few days, the blossoms age to white before turning light purplish-pink, with their dorsal lobes slightly spotted red. The foliage of small, rounded, aromatic, olive green leaves turns bronze-green in fall. Rhododendron 'Windbeam' is one of the most popular Nearing Hybrids. A very reliable performer, this Azalea is tough, sun and heat tolerant and makes a lovely accent shrub that is pleasing to the eye.
- Grows with a willowy and rather straggly habit, up to 3-4 ft. tall and wide (90-120 cm).
- Winner of the Rhododendron of the Year Award of the American Rhododendron Society for the Mid-Atlantic, North East, Great Lakes, South Central, and South East regions.
- A sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, acidic, humusy, well-drained soils. Tolerates a fair amount of sun in cool northern summers. Plant shallowly in a location protected from strong winter winds. Protect from frost to prevent damage to flowers. Mulch annually with leaf mold to retain moisture, control weeds, and cool the soil.
- Perfect for shrub borders or mixed borders, as a flowering hedge or privacy screen, foundation plantings, and shade gardens. Perfect for small gardens, rock gardens, and containers too!
- Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds.
- Removing spent flowers promotes new growth.
- All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
