Rosa 'Jude the Obscure' (English Rose)

Rose 'Jude the Obscure', Rosa 'Ausjo', Shrub Roses, David Austin Roses

Whether grown as a large arching shrub or as a climber, English Rose 'Jude the Obscure' (Ausjo) is one of the most magnificent sights with its superb, pale yellow and soft apricot, large chalice-shaped blossoms counting up to 70 petals! Prized for its deliciously strong fruity fragrance, which earned it an award, this rose should be planted near to the house or close a seating area or path, where its delicious perfume can be enjoyed at close quarters.

  • Blooming in flushes from late spring to fall, it is free flowering with its fully double blooms providing a charming display against the mid-green foliage. A feast for the eyes!
  • Received the Corona Regina Teodelinda Perfume Award in Monza, Italy
  • Featuring a bushy, upright habit, this ravishing and vigorous shrub is an excellent repeat bloomer whose striking beauty allows it be treated as a specimen plant in the landscape. It is also a superb addition to the border and creates a lovely fragrant hedge. Its medium size allows it to fit small gardens. Makes a good cut flower too!
  • Grows up to 4 feet tall (120 cm) and across.
  • Best grown in full sun or partial shade, in rich, fertile with adequate moisture, well-drained soils.
  • Summer pruning will help to maintain the height and encourage quicker repeat flowering.
  • Introduced by David Austin in 1995, 'Jude the Obscure' is known for its excellent disease resistance.
  • This lovely rose was named after the character in Thomas Hardy’s novel.

David Austin’s English Roses combine the flower forms and perfume of Old Roses with the color range and repeat-flowering habits of modern roses. As Rose breeder, David Austin’s achievement is in marrying the romantic “English Rose” look with reliable garden performance, vigorous growth, full bushes, disease-resistance and prolific season-long bloom. Over 200 English Roses have been released since 1961, many of them receiving the highest rewards.
