Excellent for adding sparkling color to dry gardens, Cistus x pulverulentus ‘Sunset’ (Magenta Rock Rose) is a low spreading, evergreen shrub with eye-catching clusters of yellow-centered, rich cerise flowers, 2 in. across (5 cm). Although each flower lasts only for a day, this vigorous shrub provides a succession of flowers for weeks until the end of summer. The blossoms are borne atop a compact mound of slightly wavy-edged, felty, gray-green leaves. Discovered in 1929, this hybrid Cistus results from a cross between Cistus albidus and Cistus crispus and stands among the most ornamental of all the Mediterranean flowers.

  • Grows with a bushy habit to 2-3 ft. high (60-90 cm) and 6-8 ft. wide (180-240 cm).
  • Easily grown in well-drained soils in full sun. Excellent evergreen shrub for gardens that get infrequent to little watering. Will grow in poor soils and tolerate coastal conditions. Protect from cold winds.
