Lagerstroemia 'Ebony Flame' (Crape Myrtle)

Crape Myrtle 'Ebony Flame', Crapemyrtle 'Ebony Flame'

Noted for its intense black foliage, Lagerstroemia 'Ebony Flame' (Crape Myrtle) is a large deciduous shrub or small tree with abundant clusters of brilliant ruby-red flowers at its branch tips from summer to fall. They stand out against the dark burgundy foliage of curved leaves, which hold their rich tone, even through hot summers. This Crape Myrtle is an ideal selection for smaller garden spaces.

  • Grows up to 10-12 ft. tall (300-360 cm) and 8 ft. wide (240 cm).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in average, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Drought and heat tolerant. Water regularly until established. To help crape myrtles retain water, mulch with organic matter 2-3 in. deep (5-7 cm). Use a liquid fertilizer every two weeks during the growing season.
  • Good disease and pest resistance. Crape myrtles are not usually browsed by deer.
  • Perfect as a specimen plant, for foundation plantings. Also makes a very colorful hedge and is spectacular in groupings.
  • During the growing season, clip off spent flowers to promote a second, lighter bloom.
  • Crape myrtles bloom on new wood and should be pruned in winter or early spring. Remove dead branches any time.
