Papaver bracteatum (Great Scarlet Poppy)

Great Scarlet Poppy, Iranian Poppy, Persian Poppy, Papaver orientale var. bracteatum

Equalled by few in showiness of appearance, Papaver bracteatum (Great Scarlet Poppy) is a clump-forming herbaceous perennial boasting huge, dark ruby-red flowers, up to 4-8 in. across (10-20 cm), each shimmering petal adorned with a purple-black spot at its base. Blooming from mid-spring to early summer, the eye-catching blossoms are borne atop tall and stiff unbranched stems. They are held above a foliage clump of bristly, pinnate basal leaves. This plant goes dormant after flowering, but the leaves return in the fall and persist throughout winter. Papaver bracteatum is closely related to the commonly cultivated oriental poppy, Papaver orientale. Add this sturdy, hardy perennial poppy anywhere you want a bright color splash with little maintenance.

  • Grows up to 18-48 in. tall (45-120 cm) and 24-36 in. wide (60-90 cm). Will freely self-seed in the garden.
  • Prefers full sun in deep, rich, evenly moist, well-draining soils.
  • Easy to grow, long-lived and virtually care-free.
  • Perfect for beds and borders, city gardens or cottage gardens.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Keep an eye out for aphids and downy mildews.
  • Cut down once flowers fade and foliage looks tatty.
  • Propagate by division in spring or propagate by root cuttings in late autumn to early winter.
  • Native to northern Iran, eastern Turkey, and the Caucasus region.
