Viola blanda (Sweet White Violet)
Sweet White Violet, Woodland White Violet
Viola blanda (Sweet White Violet) is a stoloniferous, low-growing perennial forming a carpet of intensely fragrant, tiny, white flowers with reflexed upper petals and a purple-veined lower petal. Blooming in mid to late spring (depending on geographic location), they rest atop their own leafless reddish stalk. The blossoms rise just above the foliage of fresh green, heart-shaped leaves. Sweet White Violet can perform spectacularly in a cool shady corner of the home garden. It naturalizes well in woodland, rock gardens and borders and makes a luminous groundcover for small spaces. These exquisite little flowers are well worth kneeling down and placing your nose right next to them to enjoy their sweet scent!
- Grows up to 3-6 in. tall (7-15 cm) and 10-12 in. wide (25-30 cm). This plant spreads by runners to form large colonies.
- A part shade lover, it is best grown in fertile, moist, well-drained soils.
- Deer resistant, it is generally pest and disease free.
- Native to North America.
