The quickest way to tell lilies and daylilies apart is to ignore the flowers for a moment and look at the stems and leaves. True lilies produce upright, leafy stems, with leaves attached along the same stems that carry the flowers. Daylilies produce fountain-like fans of leaves at ground level, while their flowers rise separately on mostly leafless stalks called scapes.
The flowers behave differently too. A true lily flower usually remains attractive for several days. An individual daylily flower typically lasts for about a day, but a mature plant may carry many buds that open one after another, keeping the clump in bloom for weeks.

Quick identification rule: Leaves running up the flowering stem usually point to a true Lilium. A fountain of grass-like leaves at ground level, with flowers on separate leafless stalks, points to a daylily.

A true lily is a plant belonging to the genus Lilium. These herbaceous perennials are members of the lily family, Liliaceae, and occur naturally across much of the temperate Northern Hemisphere, including parts of Asia, Europe, and North America.
True lilies grow from distinctive bulbs made of overlapping fleshy scales. Unlike tulips or daffodils, lily bulbs generally do not have a protective dry, papery tunic. From the bulb rises an upright stem carrying leaves and, eventually, one or more flowers.
The flowers vary enormously among species and hybrids. They can be trumpet-shaped, bowl-shaped, flat, or strongly recurved, and may face upward, outward, or downward. Despite this diversity, true Lilium flowers share a recognizable basic structure, typically with six tepals and six prominent anthers.
That feature alone does not distinguish a true lily from a daylily, however. Daylily flowers also have six tepals. Stems, foliage, and underground structures are much more reliable identification clues.

A daylily belongs to the genus Hemerocallis. Despite its common name and distinctly lily-like flowers, it is not a true lily. Daylilies belong to the family Asphodelaceae rather than Liliaceae.
The name Hemerocallis comes from Greek roots associated with “day” and “beauty,” reflecting the short life of each individual flower. Although a bloom typically remains open for about a day, established plants produce many buds in succession.
Daylilies grow as dense fountains of long, narrow, arching leaves. Individual fans arise from crowns at ground level, and additional fans develop as the plant matures, gradually creating a broader clump.
The flowers rise above the foliage on separate stalks known as scapes. These are mostly leafless, immediately distinguishing them from the leafy flowering stems of true lilies.

Modern daylily breeding has created an extraordinary range of flowers in yellow, orange, red, pink, purple, cream, near-white, and multicolored combinations, often with contrasting throats, eyes, edges, or other markings. Flower shape can vary so much that a bloom viewed in isolation may convincingly resemble a true lily.
That is why the whole plant, rather than the flower alone, is the best identification guide.
If the plants are not flowering, their leaves are usually the fastest way to tell them apart.
A true lily sends up one or more erect stems from underground bulbs. Leaves are attached along those stems and may be arranged alternately, spirally, or in whorls depending on the species or hybrid. Looking from the ground upward, you see a distinctly vertical, leafy flowering stem.
A daylily looks more like a fountain of ornamental grass when it is out of bloom. Long, narrow leaves arise from crowns at soil level and are grouped into fans. Several fans together create the familiar arching clump.
When the plant flowers, the contrast becomes even clearer. Daylily scapes emerge separately through the foliage and rise above it without the rows of leaves found along a true lily stem.
No flowers? Look at the leaves. True lily leaves climb the stem. Daylily leaves remain concentrated in fountain-like fans at the base of the plant.
The underground structures make the distinction even more obvious.
True lilies grow from bulbs composed of thick, fleshy overlapping scales. These scales store energy and support the following season’s growth. Many lilies also produce offsets that gradually develop into additional flowering bulbs.
Daylilies do not produce true lily bulbs. Instead, they grow from crowns with fibrous and fleshy roots. As the crown develops, it produces additional fans of foliage, and those fans eventually create a larger clump.
This difference affects how the plants are sold and propagated. True lilies are commonly purchased and planted as bulbs. Daylilies are typically sold as container-grown plants or rooted divisions and are readily propagated by dividing established clumps.
You may occasionally see a retailer use the phrase “daylily bulbs.” That is convenient commercial shorthand rather than a precise botanical description. A Hemerocallis is not a bulb-forming plant in the same sense as a true Lilium.

This question depends on whether you mean the life of a single flower or the flowering period of the entire plant.
At the garden level, both plants can contribute weeks of color when cultivars with different bloom times are combined. The mechanism is different: daylilies replace short-lived flowers with new ones, while lilies open a sequence of longer-lasting flowers on each stem.
Which lasts longer? A single true lily flower usually lasts longer than a single daylily flower. A daylily clump, however, can keep producing fresh flowers from successive buds for an extended period.
For the average perennial border, daylilies usually have the advantage in sheer adaptability. They tolerate a broad range of soils, cope with some drought once established, and require relatively little attention, although flowering is best when plants receive adequate moisture during the growing season.

The calla lily belongs to the genus Zantedeschia, a southern African group in the arum family, Araceae. Despite the familiar name, it is not a true lily.
Its famous “flower” is structurally very different from a Lilium flower. The showy, often funnel-shaped spathe is actually a modified leaf surrounding a central spadix on which the small true flowers are borne.
Calla lilies grow from rhizomatous underground structures rather than the scaled bulbs of Lilium. Their broad, often arrow-shaped or spear-shaped leaves provide another immediate clue.

Lily of the valley, Convallaria majalis, is a low-growing woodland perennial in the family Asparagaceae. It is not a true lily.

Peruvian lilies belong to the genus Alstroemeria. These South American perennials are especially familiar as cut flowers because their colorful blooms last well in arrangements.
The flowers can resemble smaller true lilies and are often streaked, spotted, or marked with contrasting colors, making Alstroemeria one of the easiest “false lilies” to confuse with Lilium when only the flower is visible.
The whole plant tells a different story. Alstroemerias arise from underground rhizomatous structures and fleshy storage roots rather than scaled lily bulbs. Their distinctive foliage and growth habit also separate them botanically from true lilies.
