Fern Leaf Lavender, Jagged Lavender, Lavandula pinnata var. pinnata, Lavandula pterostoechas pinnata, Lavandula madeiriense
Prized for its attractive lacy foliage, Lavandula pinnata (Fern Leaf Lavender) is a bushy, compact evergreen shrub with finely cut, pinnate silver-gray leaves adorned with broad lobes. The foliage is so handsome that some gardeners treat this lavender as an annual plant in cold-winter areas. The whole plant is covered in short white hairs, giving a silver felt-like look. Blooming continuously from late spring through summer, single or triple-headed flower spikes are borne on stalks, 8-14 in. long (20-35 cm). The flowers are deep violet and tightly encircle the flower head. They emit a strong, earthy, medicinal ascent. Native to southern Madeira and the Canary Islands, Fern Leaf Lavender is less hardy than some lavenders and should be protected during the winter months. It is an excellent container plant.
