One of the darkest ramblers, award-winning Rosa ‘Veilchenblau’ features bright, almost thornless stems and glossy emerald-green leaves. In late spring or early summer, large sprays of orange-scented, semi-double, cupped, dark magenta-purple flowers are produced in abundance. Changing to bluish-lilac before fading to lilac-gray with occasional white streaks, their slightly incurved petals open to reveal their white centers and golden stamens. In the fall, ‘Veilchenblau’ develops small brown-red hips, decorating the plant into the winter. Robust, this vigorous rambling rose is ideal for training on a wall, or fence and suitable for climbing into trees. An excellent rose for a north-facing site.

  • Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Blooms overwhelmingly once in late spring or early summer.
  • Grows up to 10-20 ft. tall (3-6 m) and 6-12 ft. wide (2-4 m).
  • Best grown in full sun in rich, fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Tolerates poor soil, shade, and a north-facing site. For best flowering, apply a balanced fertilizer and mulch in late winter or early spring and a balanced fertilizer again in early summer.
  • Propagate by hardwood cuttings in autumn or by chip budding in summer
  • Bred by Johann Christoph Schmidt in 1909.
