Athyrium

Athyrium, commonly known as Lady Fern, is a genus of about 180 species of deciduous and evergreen ferns, native to a wide range of habitats throughout the northern hemisphere and tropical mountains. These ferns exhibit a typical growth habit, forming delicate, feathery fronds radiating from the central crown.

Size: Athyrium species vary greatly in size. Some dwarf cultivars can reach a height and spread of only about 8 inches (20 cm), while larger species can grow up to 5 feet (1.5 meters) tall and wide.

Hardiness: Hardiness depends on the species, but many Athyrium ferns are hardy in USDA zones 4 to 9. They thrive in dappled to full shade and require well-drained, humus-rich, moist soil.

Popular species: Lady ferns (Athyrium filix-femina) and Japanese painted ferns (Athyrium niponicum) are among the most elegant plants for the shade garden

Uses: Athyrium ferns are admired for their ornamental fronds, making them a popular choice in woodland gardens, shady borders, rock gardens, and containers. The fronds can also be used in floral arrangements.

Lady Fern is relatively low maintenance, requiring minimal care once established in the right conditions.
