Phalaenopsis (Moth Orchids): Expert Tips for Thriving Flowers

Phalaenopsis orchids, commonly known as Moth Orchids, are among the most popular for novice and seasoned growers due to their striking beauty and relatively straightforward care requirements. Here are some expert tips to help your Moth Orchids thrive:

Lighting: Phalaenopsis orchids prefer moderate light conditions. They thrive under bright, indirect sunlight. Avoid direct sunlight, especially during the harsh midday, as it can scorch the leaves. A spot near an east or west-facing window is typically perfect.

Temperature: These orchids thrive in a warm environment. Ideal daytime temperatures range from 75-85°F (24-29°C), with nighttime temperatures between 61-66°F (16-19°C). Night temperatures of 55°F (13°C) are desirable for several weeks in the fall to initiate flower spikes.

Humidity: Moth orchids flourish in high humidity levels, around 50-80% for most of the year. In drier home environments, using a humidity tray or a room humidifier can help meet this requirement.

Watering: Water Phalaenopsis orchids once a week during the growth phase. Allow the potting medium to dry slightly between waterings, but not completely. Over-watering can lead to root rot, so ensuring proper drainage is key.

Fertilizing: Feed regularly in the growing season with a proprietary orchid fertilizer but reduce the frequency and/or strength of feeding in winter.

Potting and Repotting: Use an orchid-specific potting medium, which typically consists of bark, perlite, and charcoal. Repot every two years or when the potting medium starts to break down. This refreshes the environment and gives the roots new space to grow.
