English Rose Brother Cadfael features some of the largest and most spectacular blooms of all the English Roses. Resembling peonies, the huge (5 in. wide or 12 cm), globular, clear pink flowers are deeply cupped, with reflexed petals (about 45), giving a slightly enclosed effect. They are never clumsy and are elegantly borne on almost thornless stems atop the foliage of dark green leaves. Rich with a particularly strong Old Rose fragrance similar to the old Bourbon Roses, this variety is more successful in cooler areas. Growth can be a bit exuberant in warmer areas, requiring summer pruning.

  • This tall, robust, and reliable shrub is an excellent repeat bloomer whose striking beauty allows it to be treated as a specimen plant in the landscape. It is also a superb addition to the back of the border and can be grown as a climber if tied in to some support, such as a wall, trellis, fence, or pillar. Perfect for containers too!
  • Blooming from late spring until frost, it remains attractive throughout, with the flowers holding their perfect shape to the end.
  • Grows up to 5 ft. tall (150 cm) and 4 ft. across (120 cm) or up to 8 feet as a climber (240 cm)
  • Best grown in full sun or partial shade, in rich, fertile with adequate moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates some shade.
  • This rose is named after Ellis Peters’ hero of her medieval detective stories, set in the same area as David Austin’s nursery.

David Austin’s English Roses combine Old Roses’ flower forms and perfume with the color range and repeat-flowering habits of modern roses. As a Rose breeder, David Austin’s achievement is marrying the romantic “English Rose” look with reliable garden performance, vigorous growth, full bushes, disease resistance, and prolific season-long bloom. Over 200 English Roses have been released since 1961, many receiving the highest rewards.

Most people think of roses as finicky creatures, and many are. English Garden Roses, on the other hand, have the lush flowers and pleasing fragrance people love about roses, amply supplied on vigorous, lush, disease-resistant bushes that flower all season long.
