Salvia curviflora (Tehuacan Sage)

Tehuacan Sage

Very floriferous, Salvia curviflora (Tehuacan Sage) is an upright, bushy, semi-evergreen perennial with a profusion of tubular bright fuchsia-pink flowers held on long graceful spikes in summer and fall. The lower lip of the velvety blossoms is often curved under. The tall, vertical spires are clothed with a lush foliage of long, lance-shaped, dark green leaves. Easy care and low maintenance, this Mexico native plant is a favorite of butterflies and hummingbirds. Prized for its long blooming season, Salvia curviflora is an excellent plant for containers or border plantings.

  • Tender, this plant is hardy to zone 9 and is generally treated as an annual in cooler areas.
  • Grows up to 3-4 feet tall (90-120 cm) and 3 ft. wide (90 cm).
  • Performs best in full sun in moderately fertile and moist but well-drained soil. Tolerates partial shade but best in full sun. Once the plant is established it will require less watering.
  • A lovely choice for beds and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens and containers.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
  • Prune during the growing season to keep the plant neat and tidy.
  • Removing faded flower stems will prolong flowering.
  • Propagate by division in spring and by semi-ripe cuttings in summer.
  • Native to Mexico.
