Noted for its unusual yellow flowers, Salvia madrensis (Forsythia Sage) is a semi-evergreen, half-hardy, bushy perennial or shrub with stout, vertical stems bearing large, bright green, heart-shaped leaves. Blooming in fall and winter, when most flowers have finished for the season, long flowering spikes, 12 in. (30 cm), open with brilliant yellow flowers. They attract bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. In frost-free climates, Forsythia Sage can bloom up until spring. Native to Mexico, Forsythia Sage makes an attractive plant in mixed borders in mild winter areas and does well in large decorative containers. It will go dormant in hardiness zones 7-8.

  • Grows up to 5-7 ft. tall (150-210 cm) and 4-5 ft. wide (120-150 cm). Fast-growing, this plant will spread via underground shoots.
  • Thrives in partial shade in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Protect from excessive winter wet. Heat and drought tolerant.
  • Great for beds and borders, wall-side borders, banks and slopes, hedges or screens, cottage gardens, meadows, Mediterranean gardens, and containers.
  • No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
  • Cut to the ground in early spring.
  • Propagate by root cuttings.
  • Native to the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range in Mexico.
