Noted for its unusual fuzzy flowers, Salvia oxyphora (Fuzzy Bolivian Sage) is a half-hardy, upright perennial with luxuriant foliage of large, lanceolate leaves that clothe the upright stems. Blooming from mid-summer through fall, spikes of striking cerise pink to cherry red flowers, 1.5 in. long (4 cm), covered in fine hairs, appear above the foliage. Sweetly fragrant, the blossoms attract bees and hummingbirds. Native to Bolivia, Fuzzy Bolivian Sage makes an attractive plant in mixed borders in mild winter areas and does well in large decorative containers.

  • Grows up to 4-6 ft. tall (120-180 cm) and 3-4 ft. wide (90-120 cm). This plant will spread via underground shoots.
  • Thrives in full sun to partial shade in rich, moist, well-drained soils. Protect from excessive winter wet. Provide more sun in cooler climates and more shade in hotter climates.
  • Great for beds and borders, wall-side borders, city gardens, coastal gardens, cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens, and containers.
  • No serious pest or disease issues.
  • Little pruning is needed. Prune lightly removing unsightly shoots as required in mid to late spring.
  • Propagate by softwood cuttings in spring or semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer.
  • Native to the foothills and lower eastern slopes of the Andes in Bolivia.
