Fruit Scented Sage, Peach Sage
Prized for its sweet pineapple and peach fragrance, Salvia dorisiana (Fruit Scented Sage) is a semi-evergreen, woody-based, heavily branched perennial or shrub with large, fuzzy, pale green, heart-shaped leaves that give off a fruity scent when brushed or crushed. Blooming in winter to summer, depending on location, brilliant spikes of large magenta pink flowers, 2 in. long (5 cm), with a lime-green calyx, attract bees, butterflies and hummingbirds. Native to Honduras, Fruit Scented Sage makes an attractive plant in mixed borders in mild winter areas and does well in large decorative containers.
- Grows up to 3-5 ft. tall and wide (90-150 cm).
- Thrives in full sun to partial shade in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Protect from excessive winter wet.
- Great for beds and borders, wall-side borders, city gardens, coastal gardens, cottage gardens, Mediterranean gardens and containers.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant.
- Little pruning needed. Prune lightly removing unsightly shoots as required in mid to late spring.
- Propagate by softwood cuttings in spring or semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer.
- Native to Honduras.
