Salvia guaranitica 'Blue Enigma' (Anise-Scented Sage)
Anise-Scented Sage 'Blue Enigma', Blue Anise Sage 'Blue Enigma', Brazilian Anise Sage 'Blue Enigma', Salvia ambigens
Salvia guaranitica 'Blue Enigma' (Anise-Scented Sage) is a tall perennial sub-shrub boasting showy spikes of large, rich royal blue flowers, 2 in. long (5 cm), from mid-summer to fall. The blossoms rise along tall, slender stems above the lush foliage of ovate light green leaves, 1.5 in. long (4 cm). Aromatic, the foliage exudes a soft anise scent when bruised. Easy and fast-growing, this plant is a favorite of butterflies and hummingbirds. It provides a strong presence in the late-season garden, adding intense lapis-blue color to the warm fall tones. Evergreen in warm winter areas, Salvia guaranitica can be vigorous in mild climates, spreading by swollen tuberous roots.
- This tender perennial is hardy to zones 8-10 and is generally treated as an annual in cooler areas.
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Grows up to 3-5 feet tall (90-150 cm) and 3 ft. wide (90 cm).
- Performs best in full sun in light, moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist but well-drained soils. Tolerates light partial shade. Avoid too much shade or the plant might fall over. Provide shelter from cold winds. Drought tolerant once established.
- This perennial plant is ideal at the back of the border and mixes wonderfully with the vibrant, hot colors of other perennials such as Crocosmia and Rudbeckia or annuals (Zinnia). Great for city gardens, coastal gardens, cottage gardens, and Mediterranean gardens.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Deer resistant
- Blooms on growth put on in the previous or current year. Does best with minimal pruning (to be performed in spring).
- Propagate by basal cuttings or softwood cuttings in spring or early summer or semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer or autumn with bottom heat. Large clumps may be divided in spring.
- Salvia guaranitica is native to Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay.
