Hosta ‘Fire Island’ (Plantain Lily)

Prized for its brilliant foliage and stems, Hosta ‘Fire Island’ (Plantain Lily) is a fabulous addition to shady areas where it forms an attractive, dense mound of widely oval, heart-shaped, glowing, pale yellow leaves when they first emerge, then turning to chartreuse. Shiny above and matt below, the luminous foliage contrasts beautifully with the bright red stems, which keep their bold color throughout the season. Funnel-shaped lavender blooms appear in late summer, rising on scapes 18 in. tall (45 cm). A knockout foliage perennial that is excellent for massing, in containers or as a small specimen.

• Performs best in part shade to full shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Shelter from cold, dry winds.

• Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
• Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant’s growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
• Propagate by division in early spring or late summer.
