Hosta 'Gold Standard' (Plantain Lily)
Plantain Lily 'Gold Standard', 'Gold Standard' Hosta
Vigorous and easy to grow, award-winning Hosta 'Gold Standard' (Plantain Lily) is a medium to large hosta forming a dense, overlapping mound of wide-oval, seersuckered, slightly cupped, chartreuse leaves. Irregularly margined dark green, the leaf centers change to golden yellow as the season progresses, before fading to white near in late summer. Funnel-shaped pinkish lavender blooms appear in mid-summer, rising on scapes 42 in. long (105 cm) but the primary contribution of this hosta is its lovely foliage. A colorful specimen in the border and excellent in containers. 'Gold Standard' is the parent of many distinguished hostas.
- Grows 22 in. tall (55 cm) and 41 in. (102 cm).
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
- A part shade to full shade lover, it is best grown in rich, moist, well-drained soils. Quite sun tolerant with adequate moisture, this plant is not fussy about soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions.
- Perfect for the shade gardens, mixed with other perennials, as groundcover, edging, underplanting shrubs or in containers.
- Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
- Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant's growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
