Hosta 'Sagae' (Plantain Lily)

Plantain Lily 'Sagae', 'Sagae' Hosta

Among the most popular variegated hostas ever introduced, Hosta 'Sagae' (Plantain Lily) is a clump-forming perennial forming an impressive mound of large, thick, wavy, widely oval, frosted blue-green leaves turning gray-green, and adorned with broad, irregular margins. Emerging bright yellow, the margins turn creamy-white as the season progresses. Celadon streaks are painted in the area between the center and the margin. Racemes of funnel-shaped, lavender flowers appear in profusion in summer on scapes rising well above the foliage mound to 49 in. tall (122 cm). Slow to establish, this spectacular hosta eventually makes a remarkable specimen and adds great color to the shady border.

  • Grows up to 28 in. tall (70 cm) and 54 in. wide (135 cm).
  • Named Hosta of the Year by the American Hosta Growers Association (2000), it is also recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society. A real plant of Merit!
  • A part shade to full shade lover, it is best grown in rich, moist, well-drained soils. Best in light to moderate shade.
  • Perfect for the shade gardens, mixed with other perennials, as groundcover, underplanting shrubs.
  • Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
  • Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant's growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
