Salvia pachyphylla (Rose Sage)

Rose Sage, Blue Sage, Mountain Desert Sage, Mojave Sage

Extraordinarily showy, Salvia pachyphylla (Rose Sage) is a long-lived evergreen shrub, producing slightly cupped, silvery gray, aromatic leaves on square stem and spectacular bluish/purple flower spikes all summer long. Larger than most other sages, the intensely colored inflorescences of tubular blue flowers extend beyond the rosy pink bracts, while their long stamen add further elegance to the display. A favorite of bees, hummingbirds and butterflies, this Salvia is a gardener’s dream: it requires little water, little maintenance, is heat and cold hardy and produces eye-catching flowers over a very long season. Recommended for xeriscaping.

  • Grows up to 2-3 ft. tall and wide (60-90 cm).
  • Enjoys full sun in well-drained soils. Tolerates some shade.
  • Very useful and adaptable in the garden, it is trouble-free and easy to grow. Makes an attractive accent in borders, butterfly gardens or cottage gardens.
  • Drought tolerant, deer and rabbit resistant.
  • Native to California, Nevada, and Arizona.
