Hosta 'Ben Vernooij' (Plantain Lily) is a medium-sized, clump-forming perennial forming a compact mound of thick, heart-shaped, blue leaves with a wide, feathery creamy-yellow margin. Racemes of large lavender flowers appear above the foliage during the summer. Good resistance to slugs thanks to the heavy substance of the leaves. This sport of award-winning Hosta 'First Frost' looks great throughout the entire growing season. An ideal choice for growing in a container on the patio or in the perennial border.

  • Grows up to 12 in. tall (30 cm) and 24 in. wide (60 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade to full shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Shelter from cold, dry winds.
  • Perfect for the shade garden, mixed with other perennials in bed and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens, rock gardens or containers. Great as a groundcover.
  • Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
  • Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant's growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
  • Propagate by division in early spring or late summer.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
