Hosta Catherine, Catherine Hosta, Shade perennials, Plants for shade, Small Leaf Hosta

Hosta ‘Catherine’ (Plantain Lily) is an upright, clump-forming perennial forming a neat and compact mound of dusky blue-green, heart-shaped leaves with a chartreuse central splash that becomes creamier with age. Bell-shaped, pale lavender blooms appear on upright spikes in late summer. This hosta cultivar is an ideal choice for growing in a container on the patio, and is also suited to growing in the perennial border.

  • Grows up to 12-18 in. tall (30-45 cm) and 28 in. wide (70 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade to full shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Shelter from cold, dry winds.
  • Perfect for the shade garden, mixed with other perennials in bed and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens or containers. Great as a groundcover or underplanting shrubs and roses.
  • Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
  • Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant’s growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
  • Propagate by division in early spring or late summer.
