Hosta 'Christmas Tree' (Plantain Lily)
Plantain Lily 'Christmas Tree', Christmas Tree Hosta
Hosta 'Christmas Tree' (Plantain Lily) is a clump-forming perennial forming an attractive mound of thick, olive green to dark green leaves, up to 8 in. long (20 cm), narrowly and irregularly margined creamy-white, very puckered when mature. Bell-shaped, pale lavender blooms appear in mid to late summer, rising on glaucous green scapes 18 in. tall (45 cm). They are followed by red seedpods. When in bloom, the plant silhouette is pyramidal, resembling somewhat a Christmas tree. This cultivar tolerates 2 hours of morning sun in cooler climates. The heavy substance of the leaves helps to make this hosta more slug resistant.
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Grows 24 in. tall (60 cm) and 36 in. wide (90 cm).
- Performs best in part shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Shelter from cold, dry winds.
- Perfect for the shade garden, mixed with other perennials in bed and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens. Great for edging, or underplanting shrubs and roses.
- Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
- Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant's growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
- Propagate by division in early spring or late summer.
- Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
