Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' (Lilac)

Lilac 'Palibin', Meyer Lilac 'Palibin', Dwarf Korean Lilac

An ideal Korean Lilac for small gardens, Syringa meyeri 'Palibin' is a dense, compact, low-spreading, deciduous shrub that gets covered with a profusion of sweetly-fragrant upright panicles of lilac-pink single flowers in late spring to early summer. Smaller than the species, its broadly-ovate, dark green leaves are extremely resistant to powdery mildew and remain attractive in summer. They take an attractive reddish bronze color in fall, extending the season of interest of this outstanding lilac shrub. One of the most dwarfed or slow-growing of all lilacs. Meyer Lilac is especially urban tolerant.

  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society and winner of the Gold Medal Award of The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society
  • With a rounded-oval, bushy habit, this flowering shrub grows up to 4-5 ft. tall (120-150 cm) and 5-7 ft. wide (150-210 cm).
  • A full sun lover, this plant is easily grown in fertile, humus-rich, alkaline to neutral, dry to medium, well-drained soils. Thrives in chalk but dislikes acidic soils. Adaptable to poor soils, dry soils, or compacted soils. Tolerates light shade, but the best flower production occurs in full sun. Appreciates mulching when planted in full sun. Drought, heat, and dry soil tolerant. Needs good air circulation.
  • No serious insect or disease problems. May get leaf-mining moths, thrips, or be affected by lilac blight
  • Flowers attract butterflies and hummingbirds but are deer resistant.
  • Plant as a specimen or massed in mixed shrub borders for dramatic spring blooms. Use it in the perennial border to add structure to a bed. A great flowering shrub that is perfect for formal or informal flowering hedges or foundation plantings.
  • Propagate by greenwood cuttings or layering in early summer. Grafting in winter and budding in summer.
  • Prune immediately after flowering. Prompt removal of faded flowers before seed set will increase the bloom production in the following year
