Hosta 'Liberty' (Plantain Lily)

Plantain Lily 'Liberty', 'Liberty' Hosta,

Hosta 'Liberty' is a large variegated hosta forming an upright mound of thick, broadly heart-shaped, blue-green leaves, 12 in. long (30 cm), widely and irregularly margined golden-yellow, gradually maturing to ivory. Funnel-shaped lavender blooms appear in early to midsummer, rising on scapes 40 in. long (100 cm), but the primary contribution of this hosta is its lovely foliage. Slow to establish, this clump-forming perennial is slug resistant and makes an impressive specimen in the shady border.

  • Grows up to 26 in. tall (65 cm) and 39 in. wide (97 cm).
  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
  • A part shade to full shade lover, it is best grown in rich, moist, well-drained soils. Best in light to moderate shade.
  • Perfect for the shade gardens, mixed with other perennials, as groundcover, underplanting shrubs.
  • Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
  • Remove spent foliage as required and clear up dead foliage when it dies back at the end of the growing season
  • Propagate by division in late summer or early spring
