Hydrangea macrophylla 'Masja'
Bigleaf Hydrangea 'Masja', Mophead Hydrangea 'Masja', Hortensia 'Masja', Hydrangea macrophylla 'Red Masja'
Popular with cut flower growers, Hydrangea macrophylla 'Masja' is a dwarf mophead hydrangea with large, rounded flower heads, up to 6 in. across (15 cm), densely packed with hot pink or rose-red florets depending on soil pH. Blooming from mid to late summer, the glowing blossoms retain their color for a long period before taking on a metallic antique color. They contrast nicely with the foliage of large, glossy, slightly toothed, dark green leaves, which takes on red tints in the fall. 'Masja' is perfect to create a low hedge and lovely in containers. Terrific for small gardens!
- This deciduous shrub has a round habit, typically growing 2-3 ft. tall and wide (60-90 cm).
- A part shade lover, it is best grown in rich, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Full sun is tolerated if constant moisture is provided.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Watch for bud blight, bacterial wilt, leaf spot and mildew.
- Perfect from foundation plantings to container plantings. Massed in a sheltered location or as an accent plant. Effective as an hedge and makes excellent cut flowers too!
- Remove spent flowers to promote new blooms.
- This beautiful deciduous shrub should be pruned after flowering by cutting back the stems to a pair of healthy buds. Prune out weak or winter-damaged stems in early spring.
