Hosta ‘Island Breeze’ (Plantain Lily) is a small clump-forming perennial forming a low, dense mound of brilliant yellow leaves with wide, dark green margins. As summer approaches, the centers become more chartreuse when plants are grown in heavier shade or lighter yellow if they are grown in more sun. The luminous foliage contrasts beautifully with the bright red stems, which keep their bold color throughout the season. Funnel-shaped lavender flowers appear in midsummer, rising on reddish green scapes 18 in. tall (45 cm). A knockout foliage perennial that is excellent for massing, in containers or as a small specimen.

  • Grows up to 12 in. tall (30 cm) and 18 in. wide (45 cm).
  • Performs best in part shade to full shade in fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Shelter from cold, dry winds.
  • Perfect for the shade garden, mixed with other perennials in bed and borders, city gardens, cottage gardens or containers. Great for edging or underplanting shrubs and roses.
  • Watch for slugs and snails which could damage the attractive foliage.
  • Cut off the stems after blooming to encourage the plant’s growth. Discolored leaves should be trimmed back to the ground.
  • Propagate by division in early spring or late summer.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
