Lilium hansonii (Japanese Turk's Cap Lily)

Japanese Turk's Cap Lily, Species & Cultivars of Species Group


Very cold-hardy, Lilium hansonii (Japanese Turk's Cap Lily) is a vigorous, erect bulbous perennial with racemes of up to 12 small, fragrant, bright yellow-orange flowers, 1.5 in. across (4 cm), in early summer. Each thick, recurved tepal is spotted purplish-brown near the base. The narrow pale green leaves are arranged in whorls around the stems for a very symmetrical and neat appearance. Extremely virus-resistant.

  • Grows up to 3-4 ft. tall (90-120 cm) and 12-18 in. wide (30-45 cm).
  • Performs best in light shade in slightly moistwell-drained soils with plenty of organic content
  • A charming lily for beds and borders, wall-side borderscottage gardens, and city gardens. Excellent fresh-cut flowers.
  • Remove seed heads unless required and cut down stems once the foliage dies down.
  • Keep an eye out for lily beetle, aphids, slugs, vine weevil, and gray mold.
  • Propagate by seed sown, when ripe, in containers in a cold frame or separate offsets after the foliage dies down.
  • Toxic to cats (though not for dogs or any known species).
  • This Lily is a member of the Species and cultivars of species Division (IX) which includes all species and their subspecies, varieties, and forms, and cultivars selected therefrom (excluding those derived from formosanum, longiflorum, philippinense and wallichianum). There are 9 different types of lilies classified by the Royal Horticultural Society. And they are all real eye-catchers!
  • Native to Korea, Japan, and to Jilin Province in northeastern China.
