Stonecrop 'Carl', Sedum telephium 'Carl', Showy Sedum 'Carl', Hylotelephium 'Carl'
Sedum 'Carl' (Stonecrop) is an upright, clump-forming, deciduous perennial with a fleshy foliage of thick, rounded, slightly serrated, gray green leaves. Blooming in late summer and fall, a profusion of large flowerheads packed with star-shaped, brilliant magenta pink flowers are on display. They are borne on stout, upright, reddish stems and rise with majesty above the foliage clump. Both foliage and dead inflorescences remain attractive through winter, providing some additional interest. This sun-loving perennial is ideal for containers, alpine beds, rock gardens and other hot, dry spots. Very compact, this showy sedum is perfect for small garden spaces.
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Grows up to 18 in. tall (45 cm) and 18-24 in. wide (645-60 cm).
- Best grown in full sun, in average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils. Tolerates very light shade and poor soils. Drought once established.
- Provides color and contrast to beds and borders or rock gardens at a time when most plants have stopped blooming. Effective when planted en masse or in groups.
- Flowers are attractive to bees, and butterflies and are excellent as cut flowers. The seed heads provide food for birds.
- No serious pest or disease issues. Rabbit resistant
- Low maintenance, this Sedum forgives neglect!
Members of the genus Hylotelephium, border sedums are essential beauties for the late season garden and deserve a spot in gravel gardens. Undemanding, not aggressive, with fleshy, drought resistant foliage and lovely domed flowerheads packed with a profusion of tiny starry flowers, opening to white, pink or red blossoms in late summer or early fall, they are a popular attraction to butterflies. They look particularly attractive with Asters, Solidago (Ornamental Golden rods), Boltonias and Ornamental Grasses. Standing for months, their faded flowers and seed heads provide a colorful display in late fall and winter, even under snow caps. There are hundreds of Hylotelephium cultivars and hybrids to pick from. Which one will be yours?
