Salvia uliginosa (Bog Sage)
Bog Sage, Blue Spike Sage
Noted for the beauty of its clear blue flowers, award-winning Salvia uliginosa (Bog Sage) is a fast-growing, upright perennial with willowy stems bearing small clusters of deep sky-blue flowers adorned with white throats. Blooming from late spring through fall in warm climates, a bit later in areas with colder winters, Bog Sage forms an airy thicket of tall, slender stems and slightly sticky, lance-shaped, yellow-green leaves. Spreading vigorously by rhizomes, Bog Sage is perfect for the back of the border, where it attracts butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds. It makes excellent cut flowers, fresh or dried.
- Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society.
- Grows up to 4-6 ft. tall and wide (120-180 cm). To restrain spread, give only moderate water.
- Performs best in full sun, in light, moderately fertile, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soils. Named for its preference for moist soil, Bog Sage tolerates dry conditions equally well.
- An ideal addition to beds and borders.
- Fairly disease-free and low maintenance. Watch for slugs, snails, and leafhoppers. Deer resistant.
- Cut back to base if the plant has flopped and becomes unattractive.
- Propagate by basal cuttings or softwood cuttings in spring or early summer or semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer or autumn with bottom heat
- Native to Brazil, Argentina
