Callicarpa - Beautyberries

Callicarpa (Beautyberry) is a genus of shrubs and small trees in the family Verbenaceae with many species native to parts of Asia, Central America and southeastern North America. Four species are mostly used in ornamental plantings: American beautyberry (Callicarpa americana) considered hardy in Zones 7-11 and three Asian species, Callicarpa japonica, Callicarpa dichotoma and Callicarpa bodinieri which are more cold-hardy and can be grown in Zones 5-8. The most appealing feature of Beautyberries is their abundant and very showy clusters of purple or white berries that grace the plant throughout the fall and often in winter.
