Aronia (Chokeberry)

Native to the eastern United States, Aronia (Chokeberry) are deciduous shrubs with leaves that color beautifully in fall, and clusters of small white flowers that give way to highly decorative, black, red or purple berries that last well into winter. Tough and undemanding, Aronia species have tremendous potential for use as ornamental landscape plants and as edible fruit crops. The two main species are Black chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) with purple-black berries set against a wine red foliage in fall and clusters of small white flowers in spring; Red chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia) whose foliage warms up to bright red in fall, matching the color of its bright red berries which attracts migrating birds.
