Mandevilla

Mandevilla, also known as Dipladenia, is a tropical flowering vine loved for its trumpet-shaped blooms, glossy green foliage, and lush, vacation-style beauty. Native to South America, mandevilla brings bold pink, red, white, and yellow flowers to trellises, pergolas, patios, balconies, containers, and warm-climate gardens.

Gardeners grow mandevilla because it is showy, fast-growing, and wonderfully long-blooming. In warm regions, it can return year after year. In cooler climates, it is often enjoyed as an annual or grown in pots that can be moved indoors for winter protection.

Hardiness and Plant Type

Mandevilla thrives in warm, humid weather and generally performs best in USDA Zones 9-11, depending on the species. It may be evergreen, semi-evergreen, or deciduous, growing as a woody climber or tropical perennial.

Flowers and Foliage

Mandevilla flowers are large, trumpet-shaped, and richly colored in shades of pink, red, white, and yellow. The glossy, deep green leaves create a lush backdrop that makes the blooms look even brighter and more tropical.

Blooming Season

Mandevilla blooms from spring through fall, especially when grown in warmth, bright light, and evenly moist soil. Its long flowering season makes it a beautiful choice among plants that bloom all summer.

Growing Conditions

Grow mandevilla in full sun to partial shade with fertile, well-drained soil that stays moist but never waterlogged. Provide a trellis, obelisk, arch, or pergola for climbing types, which can reach up to 10 feet tall with support.

Pollinators and Garden Uses

Mandevilla flowers attract hummingbirds and butterflies, adding movement and wildlife value to the garden. Use it as a climbing vine, patio container plant, balcony accent, tropical focal point, or colorful addition to mixed borders.

Safety and Deer Note

Mandevilla is considered toxic to humans, dogs, cats, and horses if ingested, so place it thoughtfully around children and pets. Deer do not usually prefer it, but they may browse plants when other food is scarce.

Elegant, colorful, and easy to enjoy, mandevilla is one of the best tropical vines for adding summer-long flowers, glossy foliage, and dramatic vertical beauty to warm, sunny spaces.
