Paphiopedilum (Slipper Orchid)

Originating in the jungles of the Far East including Indonesia, Paphiopedilum are semi-terrestrial orchids, growing in humus and other material on the forest floor, on cliffs in pockets of humus and occasionally in trees. They lack pseudobulbs and produce short stems with strap-shaped leathery leaves. Each stem ends in a solitary flower or racemes of 2-8 blossoms each with a distinctive lip or pouch. They exist in a myriad of colors and patterns and are easy to grow in the home or in the greenhouse.
