Salvia patens (Gentian Sage)

Gentian Sage, Spreading Sage, Blue-Flowered Sage, Salvia patens Dark Blue, Salvia patens 'Oxford Blue'

Eye-catching, with maybe the deepest and purest blue flowers in the world of plants, Salvia Patens, commonly known as Gentian Sage, is an elegant, erect, tuberous perennial with 2-lipped blue flowers, 2 in. long (5 cm), that are on display over a reasonably long period, from summer until fall.

  • Native to Mexico, this tender perennial is winter hardy to zones 8-10, therefore it is grown as an annual in cooler zones.
  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • Fairly pest-free and low maintenance, add this charming and graceful plant to the landscape and you will be rewarded with abundant butterflies, hummingbirds and pollinating insect! Deer resistant!
  • Growing up to 2-3 ft. high (60-90 cm) and up to 18 in. wide (45 cm), Gentian Sage spreads slowly from tuberous roots and is an ideal addition to beds, borders, path edging or containers. Excellent as cut flowers!
  • Performs best in full sun, in moderately fertile, moist, well-drained soils. Light shade is tolerated.
  • May be grown from seeds in spring. Sow seeds outdoors after all danger of frost has passed. If you live in a cool area, you may dig up the tuberous roots and store them frost-free, just like Dahlias.
