Plant Family / Rosa - Climbing Roses
Nothing sets off a house like a Climbing Rose in full bloom trained against the walls, or draping the porch. Climbing Roses are vigorous shrubs with long, arching, stiff and thorny stems that are well adapted to training on arches, arbors, obelisks, pillars, fences, trellis and walls. They produce an abundance of large, single or clustered, often fragrant flowers. Unlike Rambling Roses, most Climbing Roses usually repeat flower throughout summer and fall. Most bloom two or more times every season: first on old canes, and then on the current season’s growth. However, several cultivars bloom continuously throughout the growing season.
An old favorite since 1966, Rosa 'Altissimo' is a vigorous climbing rose with masses of long-lasting, bright blood-red, single flowers, 5 in. across (12 cm), with a boss of deep golden-yellow stamens. The flowers are produced freely, early in the summer with regular repeats thereafter.
Fast growing and vigorous, Rosa 'America' is a glorious climbing rose with elegant sprays of fully double, perfectly shaped, coral flowers, 3 in. across (10 cm), packed with up to 43 petals. Opening from pointed buds, they enjoy a strong and delightful clove fragrance.
English Rose 'Brother Cadfael' enjoys some of the largest and most spectacular blooms of all the English Roses. Resembling peonies, the huge (5 in. wide or 12 cm), globular, clear pink flowers are deeply cupped, with reflexed petals (about 45) giving a slightly enclosed effect.
Regarded as one of the best Musk roses, award-winning Rosa 'Buff Beauty' is a vigorous, spreading medium-sized shrub with large clusters of deliciously scented, very full (over 41 petals), semi-double flowers in the most attractive shades of buff-yellow to apricot and paling to primrose. Rich of a strong tea fragrance, the pretty blooms stand out against the lustrous foliage of dark green leaves.
An old favorite since 1894, award-winning Rosa 'Cécile Brünner' is a vigorous, almost thornless large climber with generous sprays of pleasantly fragrant, fully double, pale pink flowers, 1.5 in. across (4 cm). Resembling miniature Hybrid Tea roses, the perfectly formed blooms open from pointed buds and count up to 30 petals. Extremely free-flowering, this climbing rose enjoys a long, overwhelming flush of blooms in late spring or early summer.
One of the hardiest English Roses, Rosa 'Charlotte' enjoys ravishingly beautiful, fully double blossoms, up to 5 in. wide (12 cm), rich of a very pleasant, medium-strong tea rose fragrance. Each bloom is packed with many petals (100 petals) and opens gradually from rounded buds to exquisite, cup-shaped blooms, in a lovely shade of soft butter yellow.
Vigorous, English Rose 'Claire Austin' will fill your garden with beautiful blooms and delightful fragrance. The cupped buds, with attractive pale lemon shades, gradually develop into large, (3.5 in or 9 cm), flat rosettes of creamy-white flowers (120 petals) when fully opened.
Rich of a strong damask scent, Rosa 'Crimson Glory' is a climbing hybrid tea rose with very large, double, deep crimson flowers, up to 6 in. across (15 cm), having as many as 26-40 petals. Blooming in flushes from early summer and throughout the season, the sumptuous blooms stand out against the dark green foliage and make an impressive display.
This English Rose produces large clusters of strongly fruity scented, many-petaled flowers, whose color invariably draws attention. It displays a simply exquisite apricot-orange color, slowly fading to yellow as the rosettes mature. This tall, slightly arching shrub is ideal as a short climber or for the back of the border, where in both cases, it makes a striking statement.
Rich of a strong rose fragrance, Rosa 'Don Juan' is a climbing hybrid tea rose with very large, full, cupped-to-flat, dark velvety red flowers, up to 4 in. across (10 cm), having as many as 30-35 petals. Blooming in flushes from early summer and throughout the season, the sumptuous blooms stand out against the leathery foliage of glossy, dark green leaves and make an impressive display.
A superb and very popular climber, Rosa 'Etoile de Hollande' is a magnificent climbing rose with masses of very fragrant, large, fully double, deep crimson flowers, 4 in. across (10 cm). Rich of a warm powdery fragrance, the flowers are set off by the healthy foliage of glossy, dark green leaves.
Noted for its exceptional disease resistance, Rosa 'Fruity Petals' is an eye-catching climbing rose with semi-double (18 petals), cupped, coral pink flowers, 3 in. across (7 cm), adorned with elegantly ruffled petals and a bright yellow eye. Slightly fragrant, they bloom heavily in the spring and rebloom throughout the season.

Introduced in 1986 by David Austin, this beauty won the 2002 James Mason Award from the Royal National Rose Society and is considered one of the finest creations of David Austin.
