Helleborus (Hellebores) is a genus of most attractive perennials with very long-lasting (6 to 8 weeks) flowers in winter or very early spring. Easy to grow, Hellebores add a nice texture to a woodland or shady border. Fairly deer and rabbit resistant, they are also frost-resistant, shade tolerant and many are evergreen.

There are 17 Hellebore species. Most are native to the mountainous regions of Europe, especially the Balkan region of the former Yugoslavia, south along the eastern Adriatic to Greece and Turkey. Many of the species have been interbred, producing countless hybrid Hellebores in a rich array of colors and forms.
A robust native of Corsica and Sardinia, award-winning Helleborus argutifolius (Corsican Hellebore) is an evergreen perennial with large open clusters of bowl-shaped, nodding, pale green flowers, 2 in. wide (5 cm). Showy and long-lasting, ideal to brighten the shade garden!
One of the most famous names associated with Helleborus niger, 'Potter's Wheel' is a gorgeous Christmas Rose. It features large, single, pristine white flowers, 3 in. across (8 cm), with overlapping sepals and adorned with crowns of showy golden-yellow stamens.
Incredibly floriferous, Helleborus 'Walberton's Rosemary' or 'Walhero' is the pretty result of a cross between Helleborus niger (Christmas Rose) and Helleborus x hybridus (Lenten Rose). Opening from rich pink flower buds, plentiful star-shaped, clear pink flowers with pointed and slightly ruffled petals, appear from late winter to mid spring.

Showy and long-lasting, Hellebore Winter Jewels 'Harlequin Gem' (Helleborus) features double, saucer-shaped blossoms in a rich array of colors. The large purple-red flowers may be streaked with red, green or yellow on the inside while the outside is black or purple.
