Vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’ (Grape Vine)

Grape Vine 'Purpurea', Teinturier Grape, Purple-Leaf Grape Vine

AGM Award
Vitis Vinifera 'Purpurea', Grape Vine 'Purpurea', Teinturier Grape, Grape Vines, Fall color, Purple foliage, Purple leaves, Purple-Leaf Grape Vine

Cold-hardy and highly decorative, award-winning Vitis vinifera ‘Purpurea’ is a vigorous deciduous climbing vine noted for its remarkable foliage. Emerging green in the spring, the deeply-lobed leaves are delicately flushed with burgundy. They take on deeper shades of burgundy as the summer progresses, creating a beautiful backdrop for the deep purple clusters of grapes hanging from its great limbs. In fall, ‘Purpurea’ is ablaze with fiery crimson-tinted shades for an exquisite show. Fragrant, insignificant greenish-white flowers appear in early summer, followed by lovely clusters of tiny, edible grapes that are sweet inside but have bitter skins.

  • Winner of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • It usually ripens in late summer and fall.
  • Easy to grow, this grape vine can grow up to 15-30 ft. tall (6-9 m) and 2 ft. wide (60 cm).
  • Thrives in full sun to partial shade in well-drained soils. Will tolerate sand or clay if the drainage is adequate. Once established, it only needs occasional watering during dry weather. Needs good air circulation.
  • Grape vines require sturdy support for their twining stems, such as pergolas, walls, or fences. Perfect in cottage gardens or Mediterranean gardens.
  • Propagate by layering or hardwood cuttings
  • No pruning is necessary, but it can be lightly pruned in winter to control its growth.
  • May be affected by powdery mildew and botrytis
