Delightfully fragrant and with its attractive peeling bark, Rhododendron 'Saffron Queen' is a medium-sized evergreen shrub with flowers held in lax trusses of 8-9. Blooming in early to mid-spring, it bears abundant, vivid yellow, trumpet-shaped flowers with darker spotting on their dorsal lobes. Luminous, they brighten any shady corner of the garden and contrast beautifully with the evergreen foliage of elliptic, glossy green leaves. 'Saffron Queen' is a Rhododendron burmanicum hybrid of upright, open habit upright, and open habit. It prefers some sun and is tender - hardy to 20°F (-7°C) - therefore suitable only for temperate locations.
- Grows up to 4-6 ft. tall and wide (120-180 cm).
- A sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, acidic, humusy, well-drained soils. Plant shallowly in a location protected from strong winter winds. Protect from frost to prevent damage to flowers. Mulch annually with leaf mold to retain moisture, control weeds, and cool the soil.
