Rhododendron 'Christmas Cheer'

Christmas Cheer' Rhododendron, Early Season Rhododendron

Lighting up the dull days of winter, Rhododendron 'Christmas Cheer' is a remarkable sight when in full bloom from late winter to early spring. This medium-sized, evergreen shrub bears rounded trusses counting up to 8 open funnel-shaped flowers, 2 in. wide (5 cm). Pink in bud, each flower opens white flushed pink with deeper stripes, and fades to very pale pink, almost white over time. Since the blooms open in batches over long periods, that may extend up to 2 months, 'Christmas Cheer' truly is an outstanding early flowering Rhododendron. The blossoms contrast beautifully with the evergreen foliage of elliptic, medium-green leaves that is brown beneath, from a very fine indumentum (fine hair). This Rhododendron caucasicum hybrid is drought tolerant and will need some shade in mild winter areas. A very reliable performer, this broadleaf Rhododendron is tough and can withstand temperatures as low as -10°F (-23°C). It is ideal to enliven and cheer up your winter garden.

  • Grows with a dense, low, mounding habit, up to 4-6 ft. tall and wide (120-180 cm).
  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society
  • A part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, acidic, humusywell-drained soils. Plant shallowly in a location protected from strong winter winds. Protect from frost to prevent damage to flowers. Mulch annually with leaf mold to retain moisture, control weeds, and cool the soil.
  • Perfect for shrub borders or mixed borders and shade gardens. Great for small gardens and containers too!
  • Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds
  • Removing spent flowers promotes new growth.
  • All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
