Jasminum officinale (Common Jasmine)

Common Jasmine, Poet's Jasmine, Common White Jasmine, Jessamine, Poet's Jessamine, Summer Jasmine, True Jasmine

Sweetly fragrant, Jasminum officinale (Common Jasmine) is a large semi-evergreen or deciduous climbing shrub that is adored by gardeners for its vigorous habit, graceful look and heavenly fragrance. In late spring or early summer, it produces a large flush of bountiful clusters of 3-5 fragrant flowers, 1 in. wide (2 cm), on strong twining stems clad with rich green leaves counting up to 7-9 leaflets. Blooming continues all summer until frost.

  • Fast grower, Common Jasmine can grow up to 15-30 ft. (4.5-9 m).
  • Thrives in full sun to part shade, in moderately fertile, medium moisture, well-drained soils. Best in a warm, sheltered location.
  • Virtually pest and disease free. Deer resistant
  • Prune out thin, old shoots after flowering. This advantage of blooming on new growth means plants pruned heavily in spring will bounce back and flower profusely in just a few weeks.
  • May be grown as a vine, sprawling shrub, groundcover or in containers. Perfect for coastal gardens.
  • Propagate by layering, hardwood cuttings or semi-hardwood cuttings
  • Native to Asia
