Rhododendron 'Scintillation'

Scintillation' Rhododendron, Evergreen Rhododendron, Midseason Rhododendron, Dexter Rhodondendron

Prized for its remarkably pretty flowers, multiple award-winning Rhododendron 'Scintillation' is a medium-sized, free-flowering, evergreen shrub that produces large rounded trusses of 11 to 15 soft pink flowers. Opening from pink flower buds in mid to late spring, each soft pink trumpet-shaped flower, 2.5 in. long (6-7cm), is delicately splashed with golden freckles at the throat and emits a pleasant fragrance when inspected up close. Flowering is so prodigious that it smothers this midseason Rhododendron shrub in an exceptional floral display. The evergreen foliage of long, glossy, olive to dark green leaves does not develop any appreciable fall color and curls up tight when the winter temperatures drop. Raised and introduced by Dexter, 'Scintillation' is a popular spring-flowering shrub in warmer climates. Heat and cold tolerant, it has received more accolades in eastern North America than any other.

  • Grows with an open and somewhat rounded form, up to 4-6 ft. tall and wide (120-180 cm)
  • Recipient of the prestigious Award of Garden Merit of the Royal Horticultural Society and winner of the Rhododendron of the Year Award of the American Rhododendron Society for the Mid-Atlantic, North East, and South East regions.
  • A full sun to part shade lover, this plant is easily grown in moist, acidic, humusywell-drained soils. Does well in full sun, though the flowers would last a bit longer in the brightest shade or dappled sunlight. Plant shallowly. Protect from frost to prevent damage to flowers. Mulch annually with leaf mold to retain moisture, control weeds, and cool the soil.
  • Perfect for borders, as a flowering hedge or privacy screen, and for containers. Great for small gardens and rock gardens!
  • Attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and birds
  • Removing spent flowers promotes new growth
  • Propagate by semi-hardwood cuttings in late summer, layering in autumn, or grafting in late summer or late winter
  • All parts of the plant are poisonous if ingested.
  • Toxic to dogs, toxic to cats, toxic to horses.
